Frank Stella

Artist, American, 1936 - 2024

Snake-like and geometric shapes covered with energetic patterns of vivid red, yellow, green, blue, and orange are layered to form this abstract, roughly oval sculpture, which hangs on a wall. The shapes have oval, rectangular, L-shaped, and square openings cut into them, and their patterns are created with scribbles, squiggles, dashes, and blobs of color like canary yellow, tomato red, lime green, cobalt blue, and white. The frontmost layer has undulating curves in kelly green on white. Other layers have red and yellow marks against gray, red and silver against white, and blue and silver. A tall rectangle on the right side extends slightly above and below the oval form of the rest of the sculpture.
