Provenance

Commissioned 1796 by the sitter [1729-1806], Philadelphia; by inheritance to his daughter, Elizabeth Shippen Burd [1754-1828, Mrs. Edward Burd], Philadelphia; by inheritance to her daughter, Miss Burd;[1] gift to the sitter's great- granddaughter, Mrs. John Julius Izard Pringle [née Jane Lynch], Georgetown, South Carolina; purchased 1874 by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2014 by the National Gallery of Art.
[1] Lawrence Park, Gilbert Stuart: An Illustrated Descriptive List of His Works, 4 vols. New York, 1926: 2:686, no. 760, recorded that the painting was inherited by the sitter's granddaughter, a daughter of Elizabeth and Edward Burd, but he did not give her first name.
