Commissioned by Eugène Murer, half-brother of sitter, in 1897 on the occasion of the sitters's marriage; to his sister Mme Gérome Doucet, née Marie Meunier. Private collection of Josse Bernheim-Jeune, Paris, by 1919; sold through (Etienne Bignou) in 1931 to Chester Dale [1882-1962], New York; [1] bequest 1963 to NGA.
