Provenance

(Ambroise Vollard [1867-1939], Paris); his heirs; (Martin Fabiani, Paris);[1] sold March 1950 to Chester Dale [1882-1962], New York;[2] bequest 1963 to NGA.
[1] After Vollard's death, his brother Lucian sold his share of the collection to Fabiani, who had worked with the dealer and was the executor of his will. Fabiani shipped the pictures from France, but the shipment was confiscated in Bermuda by British authorities. The pictures spent the war years at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, from where they were released to Fabiani and another dealer, Eduoard Jonas, in 1949.
