Volume 4 of the National Gallery of Art’s biennial conservation research journal Facture examines the complex themes of series, multiples, and replicas. With a broad historical purview from the Renaissance to the 20th century, the nine essays of this publication consider various modes of replication—by the artist’s own hand or workshop, as a posthumous creation, or as a preferred practice—and their motivations.
This volume and the Facture series will be introduced by Suzanne Quillen Lomax, coeditor with Daphne S. Barbour, senior object conservator. Drawing on new research into materials and techniques, three topics will be briefly discussed in this program. Joanna Dunn reevaluates two versions of The Finding of Moses (c. 1580) by Paolo Veronese, Dylan Smith discusses Leone Leoni’s bronze portrait busts of the Habsburg emperor Charles V, and Adam Greenhalgh presents Robert Rauschenberg’s Hoarfrost Editions (1974).
