Acquired by 1853/54 from a Mr. Mason, who had acquired it in Paris, by Baron Lionel de Rothschild [1808-1879], Gunnersbury Park, Middlesex; to his son, Nathaniel, 1st Lord Rothschild; by trade or sale to his brother Baron Alfred Charles de Rothschild [1842-1918], London;[1] by inheritance to his illegitimate daughter, Almina Victoria, Countess of Carnarvon [d. 1969]; (Duveen Brothers, Inc., London and New York); sold November 1924 to Andrew W. Mellon, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.; deeded 28 December 1934 to The A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust, Pittsburgh; gift 1937 to NGA.
