Provenance

Cornelis Sebille Roos [1754-1820], Amsterdam; (sale, Amsterdam, 28 August 1820, no. 51); Isaac van Eyck. Acquired by 1853/54 from a Mr. Mason, who had acquired it in Paris, by Baron Lionel de Rothschild [1808-1879], Gunnersbury Park, Middlesex; to his son, Nathaniel, 1st Lord Rothschild; by trade or sale to his brother Baron Alfred Charles de Rothschild [1842-1918], London;[1] by inheritance to his illegitimate daughter, Almina Victoria, Countess of Carnarvon [d. 1969]; (Duveen Brothers, Inc., London and New York); sold November 1924 to Andrew W. Mellon, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.; deeded 28 December 1934 to The A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust, Pittsburgh; gift 1937 to NGA.

[1] Rothschild provenance information provided by Michael Hall in letter dated 27 February 2002, in NGA curatorial files. The picture is included in the 1879 inventory of Baron Lionel de Rothschild, now in Rothschild Archives, London.
