The sitter, Théodore Duret [1838-1937], Paris; (his estate sale, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 1 March 1928, no.47); (Jos Hessel, Paris); sold to the Musée National des Beaux-Arts, Algiers, who shortly returned it to Hessel; sold to the private collection of Étienne Bignou, Paris; sold 22 November 1929 to Chester Dale [1882-1962], New York;[1] bequest 1963 to NGA.
