This "visiting dress," dated 1883, is made of wool. It is constructed of multiple pieces. The waist has eight fitted parts, six in back and two in front. The overskirt is draped from the bustle at the back where it falls in a train. The vest, cuffs, and ruffle around the bottom of the skirt are of red velvet.
Complicated designs were common for dresses in the mid-1880s. The introduction and development of the sewing machine made construction of dresses with intricate patterns possible.
