Embroidered rugs were less common than the hooked variety because they had to be made from new materials instead of scraps. This rug of homespun wool was embroidered in bold and untraditional stitchery. Two roosters done in gray, russet, purple, and pink are set into a framelike composition surrounded by a border of flowers and leaves. The relationship of round shapes serves to unify the design; notice the round floral forms, the curves of the roosters' breasts and tails, and the rounded corners of the rectangle. The design is freely rendered in a symmetrical pattern and bright colors.
