This carved figure is a whirligig. Used as both a toy and a weather vane, the whirligig was made so that the paddlelike arms could rotate in the wind. The head and body are made from a single piece of wood while the arms are attached by a rod that passes through the shoulders. Made about 1840, this whirligig was probably carved by an amateur.
