Remarks

Like so many of the American modernists, Andrew Dasburg studied at the Art Students League in New York and spent time in Paris where he saw the work of Cézanne, Picasso, and Matisse. After his return to the United States in 1910 he settled in Woodstock, New York, and with his friend Konrad Cramer began to visit 291. Although Dasburg’s work was included in both the 1913 Armory Show and the 1916 “Forum Exhibition of Modern American Painters,” at the Anderson Galleries, Stieglitz never exhibited it at 291.
