[1] Hans Belting, Giovanni Bellini: Pietà, Frankfurt, 1985: 67; the monogram also abbreviates the Latin phrase In hoc Signes (In this sign), but usually only in association with Christ's Cross.

Marks and Labels

Reverse formerly bore previous inventory numbers 524 in black paint (unidentified collection) and 245 in yellow paint (Ricci 1931); numerals removed during 1982 cleaning; “ghost” imprint of 245 still clearly visible on reverse upper left.
