Mikael Eliasen, piano

In Fall, 2016 Curtis on Tour offers Hugo Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch (“Italian Songbook”), performed as a “mini-opera.” This song cycle is inherently a work of great drama, as a man and a woman—played by soprano Ashley Robillard and baritone Dennis Chmelensky—discover, reject, and accept the many aspects of falling in love.

These 46 brief songs will be performed in dramatic dialogue over 90 minutes alongside pianist Mikael Eliasen, artistic director of the Curtis Opera Theatre. The performance will be informed by preparatory work with a stage director. There is irresistible charm in this cycle, but no happy ending: At its conclusion, the woman declares she has dozens of lovers in many cities.

Curtis on Tour is the Nina von Maltzahn Global Touring Initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music.
