Spanish Art
Grades 9 through 12

During this two-building tour, students explore and compare the style, subject matter, and technique of artists ranging from El Greco to Picasso.

Looking and Learning Skills

This tour, with five or six stops in the galleries, includes discussion and sketching to encourage participants to develop their own ideas and interpretations based on careful observation. On this tour, students will practice the following skills:
• Reasoning with evidence from the works of art and using them as primary sources on Spanish art and culture.
• Making and articulating careful observations.
• Formulating questions that demonstrate curiosity and engagement.
• Comparing and connecting different works of art.
• Connecting tour ideas to prior knowledge and experience.

This bilingual poster of The Farm by Spanish artist Joan Miró is designed to be a primary source for you to display and use in your classroom. We hope that this poster will generate from your students rich conversations, probing questions, and great ideas, which you will be able to support and develop using the information and activities provided on the back of the poster. The poster also offers opportunities to develop content knowledge about a Spanish modern artist, his artistic process, and the idea of identity expressed through art.

Important Information

Requests for winter/spring tours (January 9–June 2, 2017) will begin on December 1 and run through May 5, 2017.

Tours must be scheduled at least four weeks in advance. Groups must contain at least 15 students.

Once your tour has been scheduled, you will receive a confirmation letter via mail in 10 business days (14 days for Spanish-language tours).

Title I Bus Stipends

Funding for the cost of bus transportation is available for Title I schools that participate in docent-led school tours at the National Gallery of Art. For more information, please contact Deirdre Palmer at
