Overview: 86 works by Rothko were shown, almost all from the Mark Rothko Foundation and ranging in date from the late 1920s through 1970, the year of the artist's suicide. Opening at the National Gallery, this 2-year (1984-1986) traveling exhibition was organized by the American Federation of Arts with the Mark Rothko Foundation, under the direction of Bonnie Clearwater, foundation curator.

Organization: E.A. Carmean Jr. and Laura Coyle were coordinators at the Gallery. At the close of the tour, 40 works from the exhibition were given to the Gallery, part of the donation of 285 works.
