Overview: A focus exhibition of John Singer Sargent's monumental 8-by-11-foot El Jaleo depicted a flamenco dancer in a theatrical setting. El Jaleo was on loan for the first time from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. 7 related paintings, 40 drawings and watercolors, and 2 books on the Spanish dance theme were also included, on loan from public and private collections.

A special program consisting of lectures, flamenco demonstrations, and screenings of various film versions of Carmen was presented the weekend of March 28-29.

Organization: Mary Crawford Volk was the guest curator for the exhibition, and Nicolai Cikovsky Jr., curator of American and British painting, was the curator for the National Gallery.
