Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Memorial to Robert Gould Shaw and the Massachusetts Fifty-fourth Regiment
September 21 – December 14, 1997
THIS EXHIBITION IS NO LONGER ON VIEW AT THE NATIONAL GALLERY.
Overview: A focus exhibition of Saint-Gaudens' plaster version of his bronze Shaw Memorial (Boston) included 8 early plaster studies for the memorial. The Saint-Gaudens plaster was installed at the Gallery on a 10-year-renewable loan from the National Park Service. A 20-by-15-foot niche was built in a gallery wall to accommodate the memorial and its new pedestal.
Organization: Nicolai Cikovsky Jr., curator of American and British paintings at the National Gallery, was exhibition coordinator.
Sponsor: The Shaw Memorial project was made possible by The Circle of the National Gallery of Art. Additional support was provided by The Shell Oil Company Foundation.
