National Gallery of Art Announces Special Exhibition Shop for Warhol: Headlines

Washington, DC—The National Gallery of Art opens a special exhibition shop September 20 for the exhibition Warhol: Headlines, on view in the East Building from September 25, 2011, through January 2, 2012. The shop features a variety of items inspired by the exhibition and reflecting Warhol's fascination with contemporary culture, including books, gifts, art reproductions, and educational items. The shop is located across from the East Building Auditorium, and a selection of Warhol-related items are also available in the West Building and Concourse shops.

On Sunday, September 25, at 2:00 p.m., exhibition curator Molly Donovan will present the lecture Warhol's Headlines: To Whom Does the News Belong?, followed by a book signing of the 224-page, full-color Warhol: Headlines exhibition catalogue, available in the shop. In addition, the shop offers a wide selection of books for all ages about the life and work of Andy Warhol, including the small-format editions of Cats, Cats, Cats and Shoes, Shoes, Shoes, featuring Warhol's whimsical drawings and watercolors, Andy Warhol's New York City by Thomas Kiedrowski, the catalogue raisonné Andy Warhol's Screen Tests by the late Callie Angell, and the children's book Uncle Andy's Cats by the artist's nephew James Warhola, which tells a warm and entertaining story about the many cats that inhabited Warhol's studio.

Music available on CD includes Songs for Drella by Lou Reed and John Cale; the debut collaborative album Velvet Underground & Nico; and 13 Most Beautiful...Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests, the 2010 album by Dean & Britta (Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips). Dean and Britta, formerly of the band Luna, were commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum to compose and perform songs for Warhol's silent Screen Tests, and they will perform these songs at the Gallery in a multimedia performance on November 12 at 4:00 p.m.

Films on DVD include the animated Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists: Andy Warhol, which contextualizes the artist's work with modern art contemporaries such as Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, and Roy Lichtenstein; Tamra Davis' 2010 film Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child, screening at the Gallery on October 1 at 2:30 p.m.; Shelly Dunn Fremont and Vincent Fremont's 2000 film Pie in the Sky: The Brigid Berlin Story, screening at the Gallery on December 28 at 12:20 p.m.; as well as the Peabody Award–winning film from the renowned PBS series, American Masters: Andy Warhol, A Documentary Film.

Gift items such as a Warhol tote bag, 2012 engagement and wall calendars, Velvet Underground & Nico t-shirt, address book, Warhol finger puppet, coloring book, magic cube, magnet set, Fiestaware mug and luncheon plates, and an assortment of postcards, notecards, and notepads are also available. Additional items include a Warhol: Headlines coin purse, disco ball, disco ball headphones, disco ball speaker and keychain compatible with mp3 players, spray paint can cocktail shaker, Warhol playing cards, pop art color camera—which uses regular 35 mm film to create photographs that mimic the image repetition and saturated color palettes of Warhol's works—and several small art reproductions, including his print Marilyn (1967), a poster of one of his iconic Campbell's Soup Cans, and a note card set and exhibition poster featuring Daily News (c. 1967). Holiday items include an assortment of ornaments, holiday greetings cards, gift tags, and festive ceramic serving dishes.

The Terra Foundation for American Art is the foundation sponsor of the international tour of the exhibition. The exhibition in Washington is made possible by The Exhibition Circle of the National Gallery of Art. The exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
