Photograph Study Room
The National Gallery of Art’s collection of photographs comprises more than 12,000 works spanning the entire history of photography, from the beginnings of the medium in 1839 to the present. The Gallery regularly mounts both exhibitions highlighting photographs from the collection and major loan exhibitions of works borrowed from other institutions and private collections. Please consult the Current Exhibitions and Installations schedule for more information.
Photographs not on display may be viewed by appointment in the Gallery’s Photograph Study Room, located in the West Building. Single visitors as well as small groups are welcome.
Appointments should be made at least two weeks in advance.
