National Gallery of Art Online Editions (Œ) presents the most current, in-depth information on the Gallery’s collections of paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts along with rich capabilities for exploring the art. It features a customized reading environment and tools to facilitate scholarly research, such as signed and dated entries, preformatted citations, archived versions, printable PDFs, a tool for comparing images, and a means to save and manage texts and images for later recall and export. NGA Online Editions puts detailed information, images, and interactive media at the fingertips of students, scholars, and anyone who would like to learn more about the nation’s art collections.
NGA Online Editions launches with Dutch Paintings of the Seventeenth Century, an edition (catalog) that encompasses 123 works of art by 63 artists. Editions on other areas of the Gallery’s collection will follow, and the series will eventually comprise some 5,000 works of art.
NGA Online Editions is fully integrated with the Gallery’s website (www.nga.gov) and is best viewed in Firefox or Chrome.
Getting to the site
Select “NGA Online Editions” from the drop-down menu under Research on www.nga.gov. An Internet search may also lead you to an NGA Online Editions page if a particular artist or work of art is part of an Œ catalog.
Recognizing the site
NGA Online Editions has its own home page (www.nga.gov/research/online-editions) and a separate home page for each edition within the series. The Dutch paintings catalog, for example, is located at www.nga.gov/research/online-editions/17th-century-dutch-paintings.
Each page within the series is identified by a gray bar near the top of the page bearing the Πlogo and the series name followed by a short title of the edition. This bar also appears on every object (work of art) page associated with an edition and on every artist page associated with an edition (but minus the edition title).
