Thomas Moran

Nancy K. Anderson, with contributions by Thomas P. Bruhn, Joni L. Kinsey, and Anne Morand
Published 1997
400 pages

Thomas Moran has long been recognized as one of the premier landscape painters of the 19th century; this catalog accompanied the first-ever retrospective of his work. It includes both documentary information and interpretive commentary, with four biographical essays exploring the major periods of Moran’s professional career, each of which introduces a section of color reproductions of works from the exhibition. The color plates are accompanied by excerpts from contemporary sources, including newspaper and periodical reviews. Following these essays is an extensive chronology of Moran’s life and work, illustrated with numerous archival photographs. Two additional essays examine, respectively, Moran’s contributions to the fields of American etching, engraving, and lithography, and his commercial work, including a large number of illustrations for books and magazines. Three appendices reproduce texts and images from his life and career.
