To help students make personal connections to the lesson theme, ask them to think about a hero or heroine who has touched their own livesperhaps it is a grandparent, big brother, teacher, or person who risked his or her own life for a student. You may want students to interview their choice, taking note of the qualities that make him or her heroic. Ask students to write and illustrate a story about a heroic action the person has performed, be it an everyday act of caring or a heroic deed. Students should include a description of the persons character traits. Students may either illustrate one moment of the story or a sequence of events. Ask students to share their stories with the class.
