Student Activity: Find the Face
Other Available Activities:

Tony Smith, Wandering Rocks, 1967

Each "wandering rock" is a polyhedron (geometric solid) with several faces. Each face has three or four edges and vertices—making every face either trianglular or quadrilateral. Roll your mouse over a rock to locate faces, edges, and vertices.

What type of triangles can you find?

  1. Scalene
  2. Equilateral
  3. Isosceles

Consult the glossary if you need help with any terms.

Tony Smith, Wandering Rocks, 1967

Smith uses two types of quadrilaterals (four-sided polygons) in Wandering Rocks. How many of each can you find? (see a larger view)

parallelograms (hint: look for quadrilaterals with opposite sides parallel and equal)

trapezoids (hint: these are quadrilaterals with only two parallel sides)

rectangles (hint: these are parallelograms with all right angles)

How would using polyhedra with right angles and parallel planes (cubes and rectangular prisms) change the feel of Wandering Rocks?
