West Building rotunda
National Gallery of Art, West Building Rotunda

Neoclassical means newly classic, and that's the style reflected in John Russell Pope's National Gallery of Art West Building. Neoclassical is a new take on the classical architecture of ancient buildings like the Greek Parthenon in Athens and the Pantheon in Rome.

In the West Building you can find straight, perpendicular, and curved lines; right angles and rectangles; domes, columns, pediments, and porticos.

Have you seen neoclassical buildings in your community? View another neoclassical building designed by Pope.
