Statement of Interest

The High School Summer Institute is a competitive, ten-day, fast-paced program at the National Gallery of Art. During the program, participants will learn about the collections through interactive gallery tours, go behind-the-scenes to learn about museum careers, and work collaboratively to create a work of art for public display.

Participants are required to actively demonstrate a genuine interest in and enthusiasm for art; a willingness to accept challenges; and the ability to complete assignments on time. Students are also expected to show respect for adults and peers, work as a member of a team, learn from others, be on time, exhibit a positive attitude, and have an open mind.

On a separate sheet of paper, answer both questions. This is your opportunity to share your interests, talents, and unique personality with us. Please be thorough.

Applicants will be selected for an interview based on their application.

  1. Describe why you want to spend ten days at the National Gallery of Art. What are you interested in learning about museums?

  2. This program requires students to display a variety of traits: responsibility, working as a team member, working independently, good listening skills, patience, creativity, and a willingness to learn. Choose two traits from this list and describe ways you display them in the classroom or in an after-school activity.

Put all three parts of your application together in one envelope, postmarked by March 28, 2008, and mail it to:

High School Summer Institute

The Institute will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, June 16 through June 27, 2008. Participants are required to attend all program days.
