High School Summer Institute 2012

NGA Classroom for Teachers and Students   Image:   NGA Learning Resources   Image: Using 3-D TWIRLER, create the outline of a shape and rotate it on an x, y, or z axis, then spin it around to see it from all angles. Bring it closer to you and then push it away. Cover the shape you've made with a pattern skin and notice how the lines and shadows change. Now try to draw the same object with a pencil on paper. How can you make it seem solid and round?   Image: RiverRun lets you change the shapes and colors of objects in the stream. Click the moving pieces or slide the controllers to change the background, colors, shapes, and speed. How many different colors and shapes you can name? What happens to the colors when you add more black or white to the background?   • Explore the museum's collection and exhibitions
  • Connect with a variety of museum professionals
  • Create a work of art for public display
  • Learn and work with other teens

Weekdays, June 18–29
9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Participants receive a $250 stipend and earn 20 hours of community service credits

To Be Eligible, You Must Be

  • Interested in studio art or art history
  • Entering grade 10, 11, 12, or be a 2012 graduate of a high school located in the metropolitan Washington region
  • Able to attend all sessions of the program

To Apply

Print out and complete the three-part application form.

Applications must be postmarked by April 13, 2012.

Interviews will take place in late April at the National Gallery for select candidates.
