Teaching Activity: Self-Portrait

beginning/intermediate/advanced
A

Show Van Gogh's Self-Portrait in class and discuss what self-portraits reveal. Have each student create his or her own self-portrait whose purpose is to reveal personality and interests rather than physical likeness. Students may consider using other media, for example, music, poetry, video, dance, or other forms of expression. This activity might be extended by having students create a portfolio of self-portraits over the course of the year, or years, so they may reflect on how their self-portraits change.
