Giulio Romano, A Design for a Bowl Decorated with Swans, c. 1542
Lent from the Royal Library by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

As court artist in Mantua, Giulio Romano produced designs for architecture, sculpture, stage sets, and decorative objects, especially metalwork. No such pieces executed to his design survive, however, as silver was routinely melted down for new pieces as fashions changed.
