French 16th Century, probably Saint-Porchaire (Deux-Sevres)
c. 1540/1560, lead-glazed fine earthenware
height: 12 cm
National Gallery of Art, Washington
This is another example of rare French ceramics influenced by sixteenth-century European pattern books and prints of Islamic ornament.
Compare the ornament on the coil below the bowl of the Saint-Porchaire salt to the interlaced geometric strapwork and vegetal arabesques in the bottom band of Pellegrino's woodcut.
