Giorgione
Venetian, 1477/1478–1510 Portrait of a Woman ("Laura"), 1506
oil on canvas mounted on panel
41 x 33.6 cm (16 1/8 x 13 1/4 in.)
Kunsthistorisches Museum, Gemäldegalerie, Vienna
The woman's identity is unknown, but the laurel behind
her may indicate that she was named Laura. Laurel could
also signify that she was a poet or perhaps the muse of
a poet, such as Petrarch's beloved Laura.
