|Raising his lantern high, the fowler attempts to attract and capture small birds with the net once held in his right hand. Birdcatcher is the work of Jean Boulogne, a Flemish artist working in Florence (where his name was Italianized to "Giovanni Bologna"). He was the dominant sculptor of his day. The unusual genre scene is rare in Italian art but enjoyed new popularity in Florence in the late 16th century.
