The Housebook Master (?)
Stag Hunt, from The Housebook, 1475-1485
pen and ink with watercolor and metal leaf
Collection of the Princes of Waldburg-Wolfegg

Jupiter, related works

Young aristocrats, presumably from the castle at the upper left, enjoy a festive stag hunt. Note the rider on the left, who wears a white stole over his shoulder with the device of the Order of the Pitcher, a confraternity sponsored by Emperor Frederick III. A figure wearing this insignia frequently appears in The Housebook illustrations and perhaps represents the original owner of the manuscript. The artist contrasts this elegant hunting party with background scenes of toiling peasants and a dead man hanging from gallows.
