Middle Rhenish, active c. 1465/1500
Performers, from The Housebook, 1475-1485
Collection of the Princes of Waldburg-Wolfegg

Luna, related works

Two of the colored drawings in The Housebook are partially based on engravings by another anonymous artist from the third quarter of the 15th century, the Master E.S. Here the background figures on the right are from the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian by the Master E. S., and the foreground figures are from four of his playing cards, but with added details of flame swallowing, knife tricks, and snake charming. Such entertainers were traditionally considered part of Luna's entourage. The other drawing in The Housebook that is based on an engraving by the Master E. S. is the Love Garden, in the section devoted to Venus.
