Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine, with the Donor Niccolò Bonghi, 1523
RealAudio
oil on canvas
Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti, Bergamo

The opulent color and graceful composition make this one of Lotto's most admired paintings. He gave it to his landlord Niccolò Bonghi (portrayed at left) in payment for a year's rent. Catherine's symbolic marriage to Christ is set in a sixteenth-century domestic interior that once included a landscape view at the upper right. It was apparently cut away by French soldiers in 1527 and later replaced with blank canvas.
