Adoration of the Shepherds, c. 1534
oil on canvas
Musei Civici d'Arte e Storia, Brescia
Lotto sometimes included his patrons in the devotional pictures he painted for them. The family resemblance between the two shepherds here suggests that they represent brothers who commissioned this painting. In keeping with their roles in the Gospel story, they wear coarse tunics, but visible beneath them is the elegant black clothing of noblemen, with leggings of quilted silk.
