This painting is the central panel of three that make up the predella of an altarpiece dedicated to Saint Lucy. Here, the Roman consul Paschasius orders that Lucy be dragged to her death by oxen for refusing to forsake Christianity. The Holy Spirit (the white dove) intervenes on her behalf, making Lucy to heavy to be moved.
