Lotto's Patrons

The Penitent Saint Jerome, c. 1513-1515

Jerome holds a stone with which to beat his breast in penitence. His dynamic pose, straining toward the crucifix, suggests a religious fervor bordering on fanaticism. Only Lotto would have painted the strange bird skeleton at the lower left, adding a desolate note to the setting of Jerome's retreat from the material world.
