A
master at suggesting three dimensions through line, Degas sketched in black
chalk as well as pencil. Here he experiments with the position of a dancers
feet, highlighting the image with touches of pastel. As one scholar
observed: "Degas enjoyed leaving evidence of his executionchanges,
repetitions, reinforcements."
