Degas
often pulled two impressions from one monotype plate, using the second as
a base for pastels. In Ballet Dancers, the artist began with a monotype
print of dancers set abstractly against stage decor, and then used pastel
for the dancers, gouache (opaque watercolor) for the stage flat in the background,
and a mixture of both media for the rocks and trees.
