Edgar Degas, The Dance Lesson, c. 1879, oil on canvas, National Gallery of Art, Washington, Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon 1995.47.6
Degas used both tightly controlled and dynamic brushwork in the Dance Lesson. He combined black and green with white in broad strokes to create the voluminous tutus. The dancers’ shawls are also loosely painted, in sharp contrast to the careful delineation of the chair, floor boards, and overall architectural space.
