Seurat and the other neoimpressionists were particularly influenced by the optical experiment of Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell, who showed that spinning discs of alternating violet- and green-colored sections produced the sensation of blue. American color scientist Ogden Rood suggested that the same effect was achieved when individual touches of juxtaposed pigments were viewed at a distance.
