To create
the newspaper clipping, Harnett first painted narrow blocks of
thinned black paint over a white ground. With the dark paint still
wet, he used a tiny pointed instrument to trace lines through
it, revealing the white underlayer and creating a "typeface"
that looked real to the viewer, but was in fact illegible.
