Still Life with figs and Bread by Luis Melendez
Luis Meléndez, Still Life with Figs and Bread, 1760s, oil on canvas, National Gallery of Art, Washington, Patrons’ Permanent Fund 2000.6.1

An x-ray photograph reveals how Meléndez altered Still Life with Figs and Bread to increase the intensity and concentration of the final image. Originally the bread and the cork cooler were painted from a birds-eye view; a large piece of cheese was at the lower right; and red berries appeared in place of the figs and the knife. In the final picture, the artist adjusted the contours of the bread and cooler. As a result, we can see the front edge of the table with the knife jutting over it. These changes make the final image more dramatic.
