Born in 1774, Raphaelle was steeped in the ideals of the American Revolution. His father served in the war and painted portraits of the era's great leaders, among them George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin. Raphaelle's brother, Rembrandt, made this portrait of George Washington. While Raphaelle was trained in portrait painting and knew that it could earn him respect and wealth, his efforts in the field were half-hearted.
