The Artist

Johannes Cornelisz. Verspronck was born in Haarlem around 1606–1609 and became, by mid-century, one of the city’s leading portrait painters. One hundred of his paintings, almost all portraits, survive today. Girl in Blue is his most famous work. Though Verspronck was successful in his own time, we know little about him today.
