Verspronck became wealthy by specializing in portraiture. While in the sixteenth century only the nobility were considered worthy of portrayal, the thousands of portraits that survive from the seventeenth century indicate that portraits were commissioned by the middle class as well. Verspronck earned enough money with portraiture to lend significant sums to various relatives and to purchase a home in a comfortable Haarlem neighborhood.
