Verspronck’s main competitor, Frans Hals, usually painted the top tier of Haarlem society and Verspronck painted the second tier. By the early seventeenth century, Haarlem was ruled by Calvinists and Mennonite merchants, although certain Catholic families, many of whom were well-established in the lucrative and prestigious brewery business, remained influential. Verspronck was most likely Catholic and therefore painted some of these important Catholic merchants. His sitters were often related to one another. He painted Andries Stilte twice and his brother as well.
