Art
theorists of the time created a hierarchy of genres. Images of grand
historical subjects were considered the most important type of painting.
Portraiture was not highly regarded because portrait painters were believed
to simply copy from life without much imagination. Portraiture was lucrative,
however, encouraging a versatile artist like Rembrandt, for example, to
accept portrait commissions throughout his career.
