Individual
artists used these gestures more or less frequently. In Rembrandts subtle
and contemplative portraits, for example, the gestures aggressiveness
is muted. Verspronck and his Haarlem colleague Frans Hals, whose portraits
are more brash and energetic, used the gesture frequently.
