  Self-Portrait by Paul Gauguin
Paul Gauguin, Self-Portrait, 1889, oil on wood, National Gallery of Art, Washington, Chester Dale Collection 1963.10.150

Paul Gauguin was the Nabis' hero. They were attracted to his expressive use of color (which he believed conveyed a poetic, even spiritual message) and his emphasis on decorative quality. For Gauguin and the Nabis, decorativeness was a positive quality, one that emphasized surface and pattern. Gauguin also advocated making large-scale paintings, not small easel pictures that limited inspiration. The desire to go beyond the easel led the Nabis to larger surfaces—murals, wall panels, and folding screens.
