Paul Gauguin was the Nabis' hero. They were attracted to his expressive use of color (which he believed conveyed a poetic, even spiritual message) and his emphasis on decorative quality. For Gauguin and the Nabis, decorativeness was a positive quality, one that emphasized surface and pattern. Gauguin also advocated making large-scale paintings, not small easel pictures that limited inspiration. The desire to go beyond the easel led the Nabis to larger surfacesmurals, wall panels, and folding screens. |
